What is tooth sensitivity?

Tooth sensitivity is a common name for dentin hypersensitivity or root sensitivity. If hot, cold, sweet or very acidic foods and drinks, or breathing in cold air, makes your teeth or a tooth sensitive or painful then you have sensitive teeth. Tooth sensitivity is very common and it has been estimated that approximately half the population experiences tooth sensitivity. Tooth sensitivity can come and go over time.

- Tooth enamel erosion:

Tooth enamel is very important.  It is very important for people to protect their teeth enamel and not wear it away.  One common mistake many people make is by tooth brushing very hard and aggressively.  This can wear away the enamel and expose the more sensitive dental layer of the teeth.  Following proper tooth brushing guidelines and not wearing away the enamel is one of the keys to Not having sensitive teeth.  This is very important, and we will discuss this more in this dental article.  Teeth enamel can be worn down from abrasive very hard toothbrushes and very aggressive toothbrushing.

Gum Disease exposing dental dentin question - What are some causes of tooth sensitivity?

Perio disease and gum recession can cause people to have more sensitive teeth. Gum disease and gum recession can expose the more sensitive root areas of the teeth. Tooth sensitivity can be caused by the sensitive dentin layers of root areas being exposed due to receded gums or periodontal disease. Receded gums are very common and up to four-fifths of people have gum recession by the time they are 65. When the root of a tooth becomes exposed it does not have a layer of enamel like the crowns of your teeth. Instead, the tooth roots have a very soft covering called cementum, which once lost leaves the dentin of the root exposed.

What are some common symptoms of tooth sensitivity?

Overzealous brushing or using a very abrasive toothpaste can also cause abrasion of the tooth’s enamel surface and if have exposed dentin. A very acidic diet – for example, a diet with a lot of citrus fruits, pickles or soda pop — can cause teeth erosion and dissolve the tooth surface, exposing the dentin. Bulimia and GERD can also result in dental erosion and sensitivity due to acid in the mouth.

- What is a dental composite filling?

The dental composite filling is a type of tooth remedy on which an adhesive or resin is filled in your cavities. Since it is adhesive, it is not damaged easily and protects the teeth underneath. It can be done on the front or back of the teeth. The filling looks more natural. It is a bit costly as compared to amalgam and gold fillings. Composite filling takes more time to be one, is more durable and aesthetic as well. They are more versatile in dealing with broken, fractured and worn-out teeth. You have to visit your doctor regularly, keep flossing, and brushing regularly as well to keep your filling safe at all times. - Root Canal Treatment Chat:

Some people with very exposed dentin and tooth nerve problems - end up getting root canal treatment done.  With that root canal treatment, the pain should subside - as long as the root canal treatment was done correctly. Sometimes the dentist sees or finds a root canal treatment that was not done right.  Some people in developing countries sometimes do not have good root canal treatment done.  Some of these individuals may only have the root canal filled partially in the root.  This can be noticed by dental x-rays.  This does not mean that all root canals done in developing countries are bad or not done right.  Poor root canal treatment can happen anywhere.  In the US, the standards are quite high for root canal treatment. Generally, the root canal needs to be done and filled to the tip of the root of the tooth.

For those that do not want to have root canal treatment - here are some ways to reduce teeth sensitivity:

-  Do not brush too aggressively.

-  Do not use a hard toothbrush.

-  Reduce the intake of highly acidic foods.

-  Use fluoride mouthwash.

-  Use desensitizing toothpaste.

-  Try not to grind your teeth and if do so, wear a nightguard that your dentist has made.
